Thing #2 – Thoughts about Web 2.0

Web 2.0 reminds me of what a mentor said to me in college. At the time I was a film/video artist. My mentor, Woody Vasulka, repeated what Karl Marz said, “Own the means of production”. What Woody was telling me, as an artist, you needed to own your own tools. It was difficult as a mutimedia artist because it was very expensive. But he was right, you needed the equipment so that you could live with it, know the insides and out of it, you needed it so that when you awoke at 3 am with an inspiration, you could get out of bed and start working.
To me, Web 2.0 is the ownership of the means of production for the masses. Now with iPods to record audio, Flip cames and phones to record video, we all now own the means of production.
The means of distribution, maybe another story ….
